The terms “relaxation kinetics” or “chemical relaxation” are usually associated with the study of very rapid reactions. This is because most experimental techniques based on the principle of chemical relaxation were developed specifically to measure the rate of very fast reactions. In its broadest sense, the term “chemical relaxation” is used to describe the self-adjustment of a perturbed molecular system to its thermal equilibrium. The time (“relaxation time”) required in this self-adjustment is related to the specific rates of the chemical reactions involved. Hence, one can obtain a great deal of kinetic information by measuring relaxation times. All one has to do is to perturb the system, let it self-readjust to its (new) equilibrium state, and find some suitable device for monitoring this process as a function of time. The great success of relaxation kinetics in measuring the rates of very fast reactions is due to the availability of a number of techniques able to perturb a chemical equilibrium extremely rapidly—e.g., in 1 /xsec or even much less—much more rapidly than one could possibly mix two reagents even in a fast mixing device such as a stopped-flow apparatus. It should be pointed out, however, that the principles of chemical relaxation can be applied to slow reactions as well.
